History
1. Before the Roman conquest in 56 BC, a Celtic tribe, known as the Pictones [or Pictavi] ruled the area.
2. In 372, Charles Martel routed the Muslim Saracens, at their point of furthest penetration into Western Europe, at the Battle of Poitiers.
3. The Counts of Potiers, who latter also held the title of Dukes of Aquitaine, ruled the area after 778.
4. Charles VII moved the Parliament from Paris to Poitou.
5. the area suffered during the French Wars of Religion and the Revolutionary Wars and split into three departments, Deux-Sèvres, Vendée, and Vienne.
